A public attitude survey was commissioned by the Scottish Government on the Scots language to inform policy development in an area where there is little relevant research. The findings highlighted the prevalence of Scots as a means of verbal communication, particularly amongst young people and predominantly in informal settings. Most recognise its contribution to the shaping of the culture and identity of Scotland but views are polarised on its value to modern Scotland, and on its place in the educational curriculum. The survey involved interviews with a representative sample of 1020 adults across Scotland.
