The Parental Opinion Survey was set up in order to provide Ministers with information about the opinions of parents on a range of issues, focusing on their role as parents, their confidence as parents and their views about the services that they or their children use. The questionnaire and this report were structured around a series of parental confidence themes that were created by the DCSF to provide guidance for this survey. The survey was conducted face to face with a sample size of 2,300 mothers and fathers of children aged 0-19 identified using random probability. The survey sample covers the full demographic range of socio-economic groups including ethnic minorities, parents of children across the age range, and parents of disabled children. The design of the survey also allows for analysis in relation to the motivational and behavioural segments identified in the DCSF parents segmentation study published in 2008.
