London, 24 June – With Britain deciding to leave the European Union, a survey by TNS, a Kantar company, suggests that voters want a General Election to be called once a new Conservative leader is in place.
The survey of 1,218 adults in the UK conducted between 21st-23rd June shows that 50% of the public would like the next Conservative leader (and Prime Minister) to call an early General Election, compared to 22% who do not feel it is necessary (and 28% don’t know).
On 22nd June TNS published its final pre-referendum poll which showed a two point lead for Leave among registered voters:
- 41% Remain, 43% Leave and 16% Undecided/Would not vote
- 48.5% Remain, 51.5% Leave (with undecideds and would not vote removed). The final result after all votes had been counted was almost identical: 48% Remain, 52% Leave
The TNS qualitative Election Day Voter Panel conducted on 23rd June showed no indication of a late swing and suggested that undecided voters were splitting evenly between Remain and Leave – correctly indicating the final outcome of a marginal victory for Leave.
Notes to editors
A sample of 1,218 adults in the United Kingdom were interviewed between the 21st and 23rd June 2016. All interviews were conducted as online self-completion, using the Lightspeed GMI access panel as the sample source.
The data was weighted to match population totals for age, sex, working status, 2015 General Election voting patterns, education, region, agreement that people from different backgrounds get on in their local area, and likelihood to vote in the next General Election.
