Issues to do with communities and citizenship have never been more central to policy discourse.

TNS-BMRB is an experienced practitioner in the following areas of communities and citizenship research, including:

  • Large scale social surveys of people from different social, ethnic, and religious backgrounds; and
  • Policy development and evaluation using a variety of research techniques to help develop policies for local communities and evaluate key policies around citizenship and migration.

Central to much of this is methodological challenge – interviewing people in a variety of community languages and understanding local communities through ethnographic observation.

Our clients include:

  • The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to carry out the Citizenship Survey. This is a designated National Statistics survey which seeks to inform policy across a wide range of community and citizenship issues including social cohesion, community activism, volunteering, and local influencing. The survey is currently being used to help set the foundations for a Big Society.
  • The UK Borders Agency to assess the views and experiences of those applying for entry to the UK under the new Points Based System of migration;
  • The Scottish Government to help inform policies on communities, local government and transport in Scotland as part of the Scottish Household Survey .
  • The Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) to help develop the Inspiring Communities programme which sought to raise the expectations and aspirations of young people. Using a combination of qualitative research techniques at the community level, the research helped to map local networks, understand the norms within each community, and assess the wider societal influences at work within each community.
